Aureus Solutions was contracted to provide part-time (10 hours/week) wastewater operational support for a federal department in Metchosin, British Columbia. The wastewater system was a conventional activated sludge system that treated approximately 100 cubic metres per day.

These challenges were proving to be problematic, in that it took too much time and resources away from the primary operations.

Client Challenges:

  • Historical operational issues at their on-site wastewater treatment plant leading to compliance challenges and headaches.

  • Constant troubleshooting led to time away from primary business activities.

  • O&M challenges and costs due to poor decision making and limited experience.

  • Hiring a qualified operator was expensive and challenging given the plant should only require a few hours/week of oversight.

 

Aureus’ Solution:

  • Aureus was able to quickly respond to the client’s request. Utilizing our existing operator network, we were able to staff the plant within a few weeks to begin assessing potential challenges to performance. Oversight, training, procedure development and oversight was initiated expeditiously by our Operations group, which helped ensure consistency could be provided even if the on-site operator changed.

  • With these systems in place we were able to identify the root causes of the operational challenges the facility had faced. We systematically worked through each of those challenges and were able to dramatically improve and stabilize plant performance within a few months, despite numerous challenges to work through.

 

The Outcome:

  • The client received a highly trained and qualified team without the added expense of hiring a team in-house for part-time activities. The team also provides tremendous value during operator turnover, by retaining knowledge within the organization.

  • The cost to the client is exceptionally low (10 hours/week) when compared to years of trying to manage the treatment system with untrained resources. 

  • The client is now in compliance with discharge requirements, and the risk of future challenges occurring has been dramatically reduced, providing peace of mind.

  • The client has been provided with thorough standard operating procedures, should they ever wish to operate the treatment plant moving forward.
