Aureus Solutions was contracted by one of the largest transportation companies in North America to provide vacation and holiday relief for one of their industrial wastewater pre-treatment facilities. The treatment plant had an operator but did not have trained and competent backup support that was available with short notice to cover holidays, vacations, weekends (where needed), sickness, and other potential days missed. The facility was relatively complex and required a competent operator to jump in at a moments notice, but the client was also looking for a cost-effective option.

Working with the client’s Environmental group, the Aureus team was able to successfully identify and train a local operator, support and manage this operator (and the system) remotely using a trained and licensed operator, provide ongoing reporting, quality assurance, and even maintenance related support.

Client Challenges:

  • Hiring a qualified backup operator was expensive and challenging given the plant should only require a few days/year of support;

  • The backup support needs were difficult to quantify and time, creating a problematic scheduling issue for the client;

  • The plant was complex, requiring skilled operations and oversight;

  • Little budget was available for training and onboarding;

  • The pre-treatment system was heavily regulated, and non-compliance could result in significant impacts on the client’s local operations.

Aureus’ Solution:

  • The Aureus team:

    • Aureus was able to quickly respond to the client’s request. Utilizing our existing operator network, we were able to staff the plant within a few weeks and ensure continuity, performance, and reporting. Oversight was initiated expeditiously by our Operations group, which helped ensure consistency could be provided even if the on-site operator changed.

    • The site operator was able to feel comfortable and confident to not check in on the plant during their time off, resulting in improved quality of work/life balance.

The Outcome:

  • The client and operator were provided with temporary plant operation and maintenance activities of the highest quality, as the plant remained optimized and in compliance with requirements.

  • The cost of the service was less than hiring, on-boarding, training, and maintaining a local backup. And the additional service of management oversight by a highly trained manager resulted in additional benefits to the client.

  • The operator was able to take time off as needed, without the stress of the plant operations and maintenance weighing them down, as had happened historically.
