Success Stories - Phosphorous Optimization A two-step Comprehensive Technical Assistance program was initiated at CFB Gagetown to improve the wastewater quality. Figure 1 illustrates the total phosphorous (one of many monitored parameters) within the final effluent produced by the plant. Total phosphorous was monitored for a four year period (Nov 1996 – Nov 2000). The effluent requirement for total phosphorous at this facility was 1.0 mg/L, however more stringent optimized objective for total phosphorous of 0.5 mg/L was targeted for optimized performance. Prior to on-site activities, the values for total phosphorous are constantly greater than the required effluent guidelines. As well, the data was highly variable. After the technical assistance was initiated, the data begins to consistently meet the required effluent objectives and the variability in the data significantly improves (indicating good process control, improved operator skill and effective plant operation). |
