Aureus was retained by a client to conduct a review of a domestic wastewater treatment plant’s operational, maintenance, design, and management practices to determine opportunities for improvement.

Client Challenges:

  • The plant had been experiencing challenges consistently meeting performance requirements and was looking for ideas to improve performance without investing in costly capital upgrades

Aureus’ Solution:

The Review involved:

  • A conformance assessment against applicable regulations

  • A capacity assessment of each of the major units compared to the plant’s nominal, design, peak flows, and predicted future flows

  • A performance evaluation & capacity assessment

  • A data quality analysis, known as a “sludge accountability analysis”, to verify the reported data

  • A historical data assessment to compare the plants raw, process and performance data to the design, typical municipal results and to the plants historical results and

  • An assessment of operations, maintenance, management practices and basic design configuration against industry best practices

The results of these steps were used to determine and prioritize recommendations aimed at beginning the plant optimization process.

The Outcome:

Through the assessment and subsequent troubleshooting and optimization follow-up, Aureus was able to help the client with changes to unit process operation which resulted in improved effluent quality. Multiple key performance indicator improvements were realized, but as a single example, the total number of individual effluent exceedances are shown in the table below. The optimization study was initiated in the summer of 2013.
