Aureus was retained by a client to support with an operability review of a new groundwater treatment system design. The client was replacing an aging treatment system, but they did not have the internal corporate expertise to evaluate the engineering consultant’s options analysis and later, treatment system design.
Client Challenges:
The client wanted guidance from an operational expertise perspective in the review of engineering consultants’ presentation of design options, and later, engineering design at the 33%, 66%, and 99% review stages as well as during commissioning
The client was looking for additional support to help understand and communicate to the design consultant their unique needs (performance priorities, staffing limitations, operational and maintenance budget challenges, organizational culture, others) to ensure their investment was sustainable.
Aureus’ Solution:
Aureus worked with the client to understand and communicate their unique needs by reviewing their operational strategy, annual O&M budget, historical challenges, and future needs. Using this information, our 30+ years of O&M practical experience, and experience working with over 250 different treatment systems, Aureus participated in critical project steps (options analysis review, 33%, 66%, and 99% design reviews) to advise the client on key decisions.
The Outcome:
Aureus helped the client confidently make many key decisions during the treatment system selection and design process. Of particular note, the engineering consultant had initially recommended a state-of-the-art treatment system, but one that was overly complex which would be challenging for the existing staff to operate and challenging for the client to maintain, given their annual budget restrictions.
With limited investment, the client was able to navigate the design selection process with the confidence that they were receiving a treatment system that would meet their needs for the next 30 years.
