Aureus was retained to complete an evaluation of the regulatory restrictions on the discharge of a common waste product into municipally connected site sanitary systems at six (6) facilities in Canada.

The primary objective of the project was to determine whether existing management practices of this waste product at the subject facilities represented a risk of non-compliance.

Client Challenges:

  • The client released a waste product into the sanitary system at multiple locations as part of regular equipment maintenance.

  • The impact of the contaminant on the wastewater effluent quality was unknown as this practice was not only intermittent but also the contaminant varied in concentration from event to event

  • The compliance implications of this practice were unclear as requirements vary from site to site

  • Best management practices from an environmental risk management perspective were not well understood at either the site level or at a corporate level

Aureus’ Solution:

Aureus worked with the client to develop site-specific approaches, including:

  • A review of historical sampling data

  • A review of site-specific municipal discharge requirements

  • Collection of waste and wastewater samples to supplement any gaps in the historical sampling data set

  • Interviews and reviews of site-specific management practices and system designs

  • Interviews with product suppliers

The Outcome:

  • Client and sites were provided with actionable and easy to implement steps to manage the compliance risks associated with their processes

  • The study helped justify needed resource support to make improvements and reduce compliance risks

  • The study promoted awareness and communication between corporate stakeholders
